Crocuses and a Poem
Topic: Seasonal/Holiday

Crocus

Pokes out of just cold ground
Quietly shouts the news of spring
Opens its face to singing sun,
The sign to us the world goes round.

With strength to push through dirt and cold,
It knows the sunlight will be greeting.
From deep within its core,
It feels the sun's return.

By appointment, or by sense,
It must start the rising push,
And sideways nod to us
That all is coming round.

Crocuses  have  come and gone for awhile now. Several things have prompted me to try my hand at writing this now. My upcoming "Paint Spring Flowers!" workshop, a search for existing poems on the flower subjects we'll paint, that April is National Poetry Month, and the example of a friend's writing for spring. Try it!

Happy Easter! - A Bunny and Some Easter Eggs
Topic: Seasonal/Holiday

Happy Easter!

Here is my my paper peephole Easter egg to download, cut out, color, and put together. Here you see how a friend has colored hers.
peephole egg template photo

The printed side can be the inside or the outside. Make up your own design on the other side. You can use the images outside the egg to color and paste on the outside too. It just depends which version you want to peek into!

  • Cut out the little oval after you color the template. This is the view hole.
  • Poke a needle hole near the tip of each 'petal'.
  • Gently roll up the cutout to form an egg shape. End panels should overlap.
  • Run a thread through the holes, layering each petal on top of the previous.
  • Tie off the thread so the egg stays closed. Tape or glue will probably work too.

Happy New Year - 2010!
Topic: Seasonal/Holiday

Happy New Year!

Here is my demonstration drawing of Father Time and the New Year's Baby with a kids' drawing below. Just before Christmas we made some paper ornaments - paper angels, bells, and houses. We had to use a jacket for a backdrop for the photo. Lucky it was a red jacket.

A Christmas Dove of Peace and a Poem

Christmas dove of peace art

Bird of Peace Poem by Catinka Knoth

The Bird of Peace

The Bird of Peace
Flies high above
The cares of daily life,
And drops its seeds and
  Leaves
With gracious ease,
In unknown seas and
  Lands
Planting unseen stirrings
Among differing hands
Giving unto Earth
An everlasting birth
