Drawing penguins and skiiers for winter - adult art class

Can you see how penguins with their black tuxedos are a bit like winter sports figures in colorful outfits? The object was to draw these subjects by coloring them in as if they had an invisible outline. We did a second version where we colored in a background up to the imaginary outline of the skiing figure (drawing the negative shape). One ends up with something like that cartoon coyote when he gets slammed thru a wall and leaves a big hole shaped like him. The final drawing project was to make a drawing combining the two methods.

Winter Scenes Art Workshops for Adults, at Rockland Library

Rockland - Catinka Knoth will lead an art workshop series for adults, on creating winter scenes such as evergreen trees in snow, lacy snow covered branches, buildings in a snowy landscape, winter animals, and winter sports. Each week will be a different subject. Classes meet 11 a.m. Mondays, January 9, 23, 30, at the Community Room, Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. Led by Knoth, participants will create their own winter scenes. Knoth provides the classes free of charge, with materials supplied. Friends of Rockland Library host the workshops, which are open to the public. Knoth will provide instruction and guidance in drawing and creating winter scenes of January. Participants will work with pencil, colored pencil, and crayon, with a focus on drawing in color.

Knoth paints watercolors of Maine and whimsical animal scenes, which she offers as cards and prints. She teaches a free weekly children's drawing class at Rockland Public Library, sponsored by Wendy and Keith Wellin. For more information about Knoth's work visit www.catinkacards.com.

Why we should not be using social media (Facebook, Twitter) - Hah!

Eben Moglen, a digital privacy advocate, chastises the reporter in this interview on how we all need to stop using social media. Each social media post we make creates a record of our movements and encourages others to make such records. This results in bigger and bigger central databases that amount to a massive spy/surveillance system far worse than any KGB or what-have-you. Got me scared enough to post here to my blog instead of right to FB.

The next question is to what degree does one trust that things will just end up working out ok, or should one really worry about these issues. So far, I figured our info is all out there in cyberspace anyway - everytime we use a credit card, or debit card we leave a trail. Just watch a crime show and see how they find the criminals. Had not really thought in terms of 'the powers that be' and their possible exploitation of such records.

Not sure I have the guts to stop using social media.

I did let them draw 'hand' turkeys after they did the hard ones, but I told them I would not take pics of their 'hand turkeys'!
